Does wedding planning give you butterflies, or does it give you anxiety? Hiring a wedding planner is one of the biggest investments of the wedding planning process- and quite frankly, there are too many planners to choose from. What sets one apart from the others? And much like an interview process, one should always ask the tough questions. An experienced planner will be able to answer with ease!
QUESTION 1: HOW MANY WEDDINGS HAVE YOU PLANNED / COORDINATED? Why is this an important question versus how long have you been a planner? I have seen many planners tell me they have been in the industry for such and such years, but it wasn’t until I witnessed their performance and style with handling event issues that it was obvious they still lacked experience. Some planners may only conduct 3 events a year, some may do 15 + their first year, but the one with 15 events in 1 year would have more experience than the first right?
QUESTION 2: WHAT WAS ONE OF THE TOUGHEST DECISIONS YOU HAD TO MAKE DURING AN EVENT? Wedding and Event planners have one of the hardest jobs and having to make certain decisions with a running list of priorities is what we are tasked with. An experienced planner will have a pocket full of stories to share if and when they are asked that question. Depending on how they respond will show you if the planner is confident enough to carry your event, and if they have been put under pressure to make hard decisions.
QUESTION 3: DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO? AND WHY?
Believe it or not, but not all event planners love what they do. Sometimes they joined the events business because it looked so fun. Instagram, Pinterest and Social Media shows just the pretty stuff and so they decided to join the business, thinking it was just putting together pretty decorations. During the course of being an event planner, they can get burnt out from the actual pressures of planning; you don’t want that sort of negative energy permeating to your wedding. If they respond with infectious energy and passion, you know the LOVE what they do. Hire someone that can tell you why they love what they do. It could be the design portion, or helping people, or they simple love project planning. This will help you determine what type of help you really need as well! Maybe you need some more organized or someone who has a knack for design; either the case this answer can help you gauge!
There are other questions you can ask about them, maybe their personal hobbies to help you understand if their personality would fit yours. But these 3 questions will definitely put you on the right track to find you a great planner!
